As I head into the final stretch of college, I can't help but think back on where I have been and who I have become. At the ripe age of 18, I thought I had everything figured out. I was a planner. I knew where I was headed, how I was getting there, and nothing was going to stand in my way. That determination and passion is one of the things that I prided myself on. Somewhere along the way.. I lost it.. maybe not all of it but a significant portion. For lack of a better term, I would describe myself as "that girl" in high school. I had good grades, great friends, and life was EASY. I never knew what failure felt like and it was something that I would have never dreamed of letting myself experience. College was nowhere near as smooth sailing. I had always prided myself on my ability to adhere to new surroundings seamlessly.. but I ended up in an emotional place that I could not navigate. Today.. I think I got some of that confidence back. It has been a difficult lesson for me to learn over these past three years.. That plans DO change and that a new or different plan does not equal a failure. Maybe the plan was flawed in the first place or maybe I have changed for the better and now my plans must change along with me. I never would have thought that one sentence from my summer boss could restore in me something that I thought was lost forever. He may be unaware of it, but he let me know that this new plan is going to be a good one. The unknown scares me.. and for the first time in my life.. I don't have a definite plan, but I have a blue print. I still have room to knock out some walls or add a sunroom and I am learning that the wiggle room in life allows for exciting things.
I definitely appreciate the advice given on the last few posts. I am the world's biggest overanalyzer so I have a habit of creating HUGE somethings out of very small nothings. I ended up having a great weekend. Met some of my sorority sisters for lunch and margaritas. The poor waiter spilled our margarita all over himself when he tried to shake it up.. Said we made him nervous. The baseball game was a lot of fun. Our seats were on field level and pretty close too. Unfortunately, no sign of Kate Hudson who had been spotted at the previous game cheering on her man A-Rod. I actually saw Kate and Goldie Hawn junior year of high school when I was in London.. they look soo much alike in person! After the game, I met up with some more sorority sisters for a fun night in the city. I really do love the atmosphere of a big city. There is never a dull moment. I am starting to get my bearings a bit more than at the beginning of the summer.. still working on navigating the subways! I fully intend to live somewhere urban after graduation.. bring on the noise, concrete, and public transportation! :)
Hope you all had a great weekend as well... I completely forgot until one of my coworkers reminded me that we have a short week this week. Still need to firm up my plans for this holiday weekend and am praying for good weather!
This day has been going by surprisingly fast considering that my boss is out of the office and I was left with little to do. I was supposed to be assigned a project somewhere around 4 hours ago but hopefully that has been postponed until Monday. In light of yesterday's post I received a text message from this certain individual this morning asking me if I would hate him if he came another weekend.. Apparently there were "things that came up that made it not make sense to come this weekend". I dont really know what that means but part of me is actually relieved. I need to be over this situation once and for all because nothing positive is coming from it. This boy is the king of mixed signals and I am not emotionally savvy enough to navigate this without being hurt. So I need to remove myself from the situation in order to keep my sanity. Lucky for me our houses are within a stone's throw of each other at school in the fall. Perfect...
So now that I have a plan-less weekend, I am going to head into the city tonight for dinner with my twin (in my sorority family) who I have not seen in ages as she spent the past year gallivanting around Europe. It will be great to catch up. A lot of my friends and sorority sisters from school are in the NYC area this summer so it has been enjoyable to find fun restaurants and bars. My cousin also called me yesterday with an offer to go to the Yankees Mets game this weekend which I declined because I was supposed to be having a visitor. Hopefully the tickets are still available as I'm sure that would be a great time.
Hope everyone has a great weekend! I am not sure what the weather has in store but I am hoping to be free of this rain we have been having for what seems like forever!!
Would a boy drive 3 hours to spend the weekend with a girl that he "didn't think of like that"? This is the million dollar question and I need help. Story to follow when I'm not at work since it is a pretty long and sorted drama..
I received my first tag from Beth at Social Climbers to tell you all 10 things about myself.. 1. I have never eaten a bowl of cereal in my life. I will eat some cereal dry but the thought of letting it get soggy in a bowl of milk is not appetizing to me in the least.
2. I had bacterial meningitis when I was 9 years old and came very close to dying. It started from an ear infection and the doctor's were convinced that it was just the flu. The nurses told my parents that they never expected me to walk out of the hospital.
3. I was born on my grandmother's birthday. She always told me that her first grandchild was the best present she could ever ask for. She passed away last July and I miss her more and more everyday.
4. My dad's mother came to the United States from the Bahamas. I still have family that lives there and they are a blast to visit. My uncle's brother in law was actually the Prime Minister of the Bahamas until 2007. I like to pretend that I am some sort of royalty. ;)
5. Whenever I turn the volume up on the car or radio, it always has to be on an even number. 5's are okay as well.
6. I am a sorority girl, Computer Science major, and Mathematics minor. I get told pretty often that "I don't look like a Computer Science major." I have yet to figure out of that is a compliment but I choose to take it as such.
7. I lived in Japan from the age of 4 to 6. It was a great place to grow up as it was very safe and there were a lot of things to do and see. I wish I had been a bit older, but my mom and I have talked recently about going back for a visit. Since I live in a community with heavy ties to the military a lot of my friends lived there as well and people joke that you come to our town in Virginia to meet up with your friends from Okinawa.
8. I have a pretty sharp long term memory but a terrible short term memory. I will remember your face if I saw you for 5 minutes once three years ago but don't ask me where I put my car keys. Proof: Recently I saw a girl that had been a great friend in elementary school on the streets of NYC. She moved away when we were 8 and that was the last time I saw her but instantly I knew it was her.
9. My younger sister tells me that I am "life retarded". I am not much for cooking and cleaning. While it might not be the most PC of statements, she is pretty accurate. She is planning to go to culinary school after college, and she is definitely the more domestic of the two of us. I tell her that we need to make sure she lives near me when we get older so I can come to her house for Thanksgiving dinner.
10. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about all of you over the last year since I stumbled upon this blogging community last summer. I wish that I could have a little bit of each of your personalities and talents because I think you are all great women. Thanks for just being yourselves!
I won't tag anyone because I feel like you are all so experienced and I'm still a newbie but I hope that you were able to learn a little something about me!
Rascal Flatts is hands down my favorite band. I have seen them in concert a handful of times and every year it is better than the last. Since I am in New York interning for the summer I will be missing the show at home in Virginia with all of my friends. I thought that all of my summer concert sadness would be relieved when I realized that they are playing about an hour and a half from my university in Small Town, PA the weekend after classes start. I even called my roommate and we were all set to get tickets. That was until we realized that the concert falls on the same day as the second round of sorority rush. You can miss a round but there is a fine to pay and while there is no stipulation on what you can miss for.. I don't know if Gary, Joe Don, and Jay are a legitimate excuse. I need advice.. because as a senior I have a much lesser role in recruitment. The juniors pretty much run the show and I did MORE than my fair share last year. I even missed an engineering lab, had to drive all over to get battery operated candles, accidentally left my flashers on all night which resulted in a parking ticket AND a dead battery. This would definitely be a fun way to kick off senior year and it would be my roommate's first Rascal Flatts experience. But at the same time I always get a bit annoyed when the seniors start to check out and stop coming to sorority events.. and this is our first event of the school year. What to do, what to do?!
Another summer.. another internship.. and I find myself back in a familiar place.. a lurker in the Blogosphere. I enjoy so much reading all of your blogs and have made a few attempts to become a contributing member of society but I end up finding your lives to be much more interesting than mine. So lets see how this goes...
